The Project
Eligible schools were allocated additional DfE monies to prioritise works which would improve energy efficiency across the school’s estate. Due to our longstanding relationship with the school, they sought our assistance with advising them with how best to invest the capital funding on energy efficiency measures.
Following a review of potential options, it was determined that the replacement of the existing fluorescent tube lighting (throughout the main hall, office and classroom accommodations) to LED fittings, was the most appropriate and efficient use of the funding allocation. Given significant increases in energy costs, this was one of the fastest and easiest ways to cut down on electrical consumption, whilst compensating against rising energy costs.
The project was tendered via a single stage tender process, with the works let via a JCT minor works contract (with contractor’s design). The project value was circa £16.1k and had a 4-week installation and fit out programme, completing in August 2023.
Our Role
We were appointed as contract administrator where we produced a performance specification in conjunction with the school. We then tendered the works, issued contract documentation, monitored quality and progress on site.
As part of our role as Contract Administrator, we chaired progress meetings, undertook valuations, instructed variations, certified the works practically complete and ensured snagging items were closed out.
Key Outcomes
- Reduction in electrical consumption, costs, and CO2 emissions.
- A fully compliant lighting provision, aligning with both the Generic Design Guide contained within the school Output Specification and CIBSE lighting guide (5) for education.
- Enhanced learning environments (which research has shown leads to improved pupil performance).
- Reduced maintenance costs as a result of LED lighting having approximately 10 times longer service life than that of traditional lighting.
